MAGICAL TOWNS: MEXICO’S HISTORIC AND CULTURAL WEALTH

Logo PUEBLOS MAGICOSIn 2001, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, urged a strategy to boost tourism development in different regions of our country. This new program was aimed to diversify tourism in Mexico – beyond Mexico City and beach destinations. Based on the historical and cultural attributes of different locations, the program“PUEBLOS MAGICOS” (Magical Towns) was created.

MEXICO CITY’S MAGICAL DISTRICTS: LA MERCED

If you ask anyone in Mexico about “La Merced”, they will immediately think in the biggest market in Mexico City. In fact, in the late years of the 19th century, almost all the district was a big market, and about 150 years ago the first permanent buildings were built. Today, la Merced market is the biggest traditional market of the city.

Visiting Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the most interesting and ancient cities in America. Originally funded by the Mexicas, known as Tenochtitlan, and later developed by the Spanish empire during the XVI century over its ruins, the ancient Aztec main center, Mexico City is one of the biggest and most populated cities in the world. With almost 700 years of history, our city has pre Hispanic ruins, big churches and palaces from the colonial era, modern buildings, legends and stories, places and multicolored people.
